Farrah Allen-McKay, Food Literacy Coordinator, has a large family of eight wonderful sons, five glorious grandchildren and an elder dog named Roxy. She loves making memories with her loved ones by being on the land, which usually involves a four-wheeler trail or ten. Farrah’s late father introduced her to the Food Bank in 1992 to volunteer, and that is what has guided her in the passion for a career at the Food Bank. Farrah credits past Executive Director Mary DeAdder for guiding her into the person she is today, by teaching her the meaning of providing support, dignified respect, powerful human interaction and true humility. Farrah has been involved with the Colchester Food Bank for two and a half decades: first as a volunteer and later in various staff roles before settling into the role of Client Services Coordinator in 2022. Farrah aims to serve others, contribute to society, and grow with the organization in a fun, kind and respectful way.

Five years ago, she relocated with her husband and daughter to Nova Scotia, Canada, a move that she found deeply rewarding. The warm welcome she received from the local community made her fall in love with Canada, and particularly with the town of Truro, which she now proudly calls home.
Since July 2024, she has served as the Financal Controller for the Colchester Food Network, an organization whose mission — supporting those in need — aligns closely with her personal values. In addition to her professional role, she has been volunteering with Kaine’s Kitchen in Truro for the past two years, an experience she greatly enjoys and that has deepened her connection to the community.
Faith has always played a central role in her life. As a devout Christian, she founded and led the Iranian Christian Church in Bristol, UK, for seven years prior to moving to Canada — a role that remains one of her proudest contributions.
Beyond her professional and volunteer work, she is passionate about sharing her Iranian heritage, especially through food. She proudly serves as treasurer on the board of the Iranian Cultural Society of Nova Scotia. In her free time, she enjoys walking in nature and participating in activities that foster connections between Iranian and non-Iranian communities.

She has a background in community service, having worked at the Salvation Army and organized various youth programs. She also has experience working and volunteering with newcomers and people with disabilities. Through these experiences, she has learned to value the importance of building strong relationships and providing support that helps people fully participate in their communities. Laura is a proud alumna of Mount Allison University, where she earned a degree with specializations in political science and sociology, along with a certificate in equity, diversity, and inclusion. This education has provided a strong foundation for her work.
Outside of work, she enjoys staying active and is involved with a multisport program for young children. Laura looks forward to continuing to grow in her role and supporting both volunteers and clients in ways that make a meaningful difference today and strengthen the community for the future.
